Academic Advice

Navigating the academic landscape can be challenging, but our team is here to support you. If you find yourself facing adverse situations, we can advise you on applying for mitigation, your right to submit a complaint and academic appeals, assist with disciplinaries, and fitness to practice.

What to expect when you contact the LBSU Advice Service:

Have a read of our FAQs before contacting us in case your question can be answered there. If you can’t find the answer you’re looking for then get in contact with us via our contact form. Please make sure you give as much information as possible about your query as well as attaching copies of any relevant documentation (including emails). This all helps us to ensure we are advising you accurately and will mean you get a detailed response rather than us getting back to you asking for more information.

We always aim to get back to you as soon as possible but we are a small team and that means that when we are busy or have particularly complex cases to deal with it might take us a little longer to get back to you. We aim to reply to all contacts within 3 working days from receipt.

We will always try to reply to you in the way in which you have asked us to on the form but this isn’t always possible and sometimes we might have to email you if we have no teams/phone appointments available before any deadlines you have made us aware of. We will review all the information you have provided to us and then get back to you with any options available to you. If we are unable to advise you on the issue you have contacted us about we will try to signpost you to the most appropriate place.

FAQ’s

What is the deadline for appealing?

You only have 15 working days from the date when your results are officially published on Results Online to submit the completed Appeal Request Form to the University. (The day of publication counts as the first working day). Find more about appeals here: www.leedsbeckettsu.co.uk/advice/academic-advice/appeals

I think I should have been given higher marks - can I appeal?

No. You cannot appeal because you feel you should have been awarded higher marks – the University will refuse to accept this as a valid ground for appealing. In order to appeal you will need demonstrate that you meet 1 or more of the 4 appeal grounds. Find more about appeals here: www.leedsbeckettsu.co.uk/advice/academic-advice/appeals

Can I attend my graduation ceremony if I am appealing my classification?

The University has confirmed that if you have received an award, you are entitled to graduate at the graduation ceremony with this award. If your classification is changed as a result of an appeal hearing, you will be issued with a new certificate and transcript at that time. Find more about appeals here: www.leedsbeckettsu.co.uk/advice/academic-advice/appeals

Will I be allowed to progress and carry over failed modules?

Only in exceptional cases. You may carry up to two modules (40 credits) forward if you:

  • Had confirmed extenuating circumstances that prevented you from completing assessments/reassessments.

It is important that you consult your course handbook and course administrator for your specific course requirements as exceptions might apply (for example, some modules might be pre-requisite which must be passed before progression to the next level is permitted; or there may be specific requirements on some professionally accredited courses that mean you are not permitted to fail one module): Course Handbooks - 2024/25 | student information | Leeds Beckett University
