If you’re staying around Leeds for the summer or looking for some last minute things to do before graduation, there are plenty of fantastic day trips within easy reach of the city. From historic streets and countryside walks to independent shops and buzzing city centres, these day trips are all easily accessible and the perfect way to spend a summer day!
York
One of the easiest and most popular day trips from Leeds, York combines history, culture and plenty of places to eat and drink. Trains run from Leeds, Burley Park and Headingley and take less than an hour, so its perfect for a spontaneous day out.
We recommend walking the famous city walls, check out all the independent shops and cafes along The Shambles and head over the infamous York Minster for some spectacular architecture.
You can also check out all the bars, restaurants and cafes along the river and sit along the river if the weather is good.
Hebden Bridge
Known for its creative community, independent businesses and beautiful countryside, Hebden Bridge is a perfect destination for a slower paced summer day out.
The town is jam packed with independent bookshops, vintage stores, bakeries and cafes. Take a wander along the canal towpath, browse the local market or simply spend an afternoon exploring the unique high street. If you’re feeling more active, head up into the surrounding Pennine hills for stunning views over the valley. The National Trust Hardcastle Crags offers great woodland walks, streams and picnic spots just outside the town centre.
Plus, you can get there by train in less than an hour, making it one of the easiest countryside escapes.
Haworth
If you’re looking for a village that feels like you’ve stepped into another era, Haworth is hard to beat. Famous as the home of the Bronte sisters, this picturesque village is full of cobbled streets, stone buildings and Yorkshire charm.
The Bronte Parsonage Museum is a must visit to learn more about the famous literary family. Make sure to leave time to explore the independent shops, tearooms and pubs along Main Street. If the weather is on your side, head out onto the surrounding Moors for some iconic Yorkshire views.
Just gather you’re friends, pack up a picnic and hop on a train from Leeds to Keighley, then connect via local bus or taxi to Haworth.
Manchester
If you’re after a city break without travelling too far, Manchester has everything from amazing museums to great shopping and nightlife.
We recommend spending time exploring the Northern Quarter’s independent cafes, street art and vintage stores. Alternatively, football fans can visit the National Football Museum or take a stadium tour. Whilst you’re there, check out the Manchester Art Gallery or the Science and Industry Museum.
Manchester is also the perfect place to do some retail therapy! Check out the Trafford Centre or Manchester Arndale for loads of different shops. Before you leave, make sure to try some of the amazing food Manchester has to offer, from street food markets to award-winning restaurants.

Knaresborough
Despite being less than an hour from Leeds, Knaresborough feels a world away from city life. The town is best known for its dramatic viaduct spanning the River Nidd and its picturesque riverside setting.
One of the most popular activities is hiring a rowing boat on the river during the summer months. You can also visit the historic castle ruins, explore the cave associated with Mother Shipton or just enjoy a walk along the river.
The town centre is also packed with independent cafes and traditional Yorkshire pubs, making it an ideal place to spend a relaxed afternoon.

Harrogate
With plenty of green space and loads of independent businesses, Harrogate is one of Yorkshire’s most popular spa towns.
A visit isn’t complete without exploring the Valley Gardens, a beautiful park filled with colourful flower displays and plenty of space to relax and escape the city. The town centre is full of independent boutiques, cafes and restaurants, while the famous Turkish Baths offer a unique experience if you’re looking to treat yourself.
No trip to Harrogate would be complete without stopping for afternoon tea at world-famous Betty’s.
Direct trains run from Leeds regularly and take around 40 minutes.
Sheffield
Often overlooked, Sheffield is packed with culture, green spaces and great food.
Start you’re day at Kelham Island, one of the UK’s coolest neighbourhoods, where you’ll find independent cafes, breweries and street food venues. The city centre is home to excellent shopping, galleries and museums, while nearby parks offer plenty of outdoor space.
One of Sheffield’s biggest advantages is its proximity to the Peak District. If you fancy combining city exploration with a countryside walk, you can easily reach some stunning Peak District locations from the city centre.
Direct trains from Leeds take around 45 minutes, making Sheffield an easy day trip choice.
