Moving Out? Here’s your end of year checklist for leaving student housing:
The end of year is here and whether you’re heading home for the summer, moving into a new house or graduating, it’s time to pack up and move out!
It can be easy to get caught up in exams, celebrations and goodbyes, but taking a little time to leave your accommodation properly can save you stress, help get your deposit back and keep the local area looking its best.
There’s plenty of tips flying around, so we’ve compiled all the essentials into one place, here:
- Make a checklist:
Before you start packing, create a checklist of everything you need to do before moving day. Breaking tasks down into smaller steps can help you stay organised and make sure nothing gets forgotten.
Include things like packing, cleaning, returning keys and taking meter readings if needed.
- Empty your fridge and cupboards:
One of the easiest things to overlook is food!
Go through your fridge, freezer and cupboards well before your move-out date and use up what you can. If you have any unopened food, toiletries or household essentials that you won’t need, donate them to local food banks or collection points rather than throwing them away.
- Don’t forget the bins:
Before you leave, make sure every bin in the house has been emptied!
Remember to check:
- Kitchen bins
- Recycling bins
- Bathroom bins
- Bedroom bins
Leaving rubbish behind could result in cleaning charges, so it’s worth doing one final sweep before you go.
- Check your post box:
If you live in halls or shared flats, don’t forget to check your post box before leaving. Make sure you’ve collected any letters or parcels and update your address with any services that might still be sending post to your student accommodations.
Another top tip: make sure to change your address on any websites you use to shop (think Deliveroo, Dominos, clothes shopping).
- Leave it clean and tidy:
Before you hand over the keys, give your house or flat a final clean. Wipe down surfaces, vacuum floors, clean the bathroom and make sure any shared spaces are left in good condition.
Not only is it considerate for the next tenants, but it can also help reduce the risk of deductions from your deposit.
- Return your keys on time:
Whether you’re living in halls or renting privately, make sure you know exactly when and where your keys need to be returned. Missing key return deadlines could lead to charges, so check the instructions from your accommodation provider or estate agents in advance.
- Do a final room check:
Once everything is packed, take one last look around.
Check places that are easy to miss, including:
- Under the bed
- Wardrobes
- Drawers
- Cupboards
- Window sills
- Behind doors
You’ll thank yourself later if you find that missing charger or favourite hoodie before it’s too late.
- Take photos before you leave:
Before handing over your keys, take clear photos of your room or property. Having a record of the condition you left it in can be useful if there are any questions about damage or cleaning charges later on.
- Lock up before you go:
It sounds obvious, but after all the packing and moving, it’s easy to forget!
Make sure all windows are closed, lights are switched off and the door is locked securely before leaving for the final time.
- Dispose of unwanted items responsibly:
If you have items you no longer want, please don’t leave them on the pavement or next to bins.
Instead:
- Donate clothes, kitchenware and household items to charity shops
- Use local donation bins
- Recycle items where possible
- Dispose of waste properly using designated bins
By taking a few extra minutes to dispose of items responsibly, you’ll help keep local streets clean and tidy for everyone!
Moving out can feel like a lot, but tackling it one step at a time makes the process much easier. A little preparation now can save you time, money and stress later.
Good luck with your move and enjoy your summer!
