If you need some help and advice the Students’ Union Advisers have answered some questions on where you can go for additional support if you are feeling stressed about your exams.

Q: I’m finding it difficult to plan my work and get down to revision. What can I do?
A:
It may help on a practical level if you ensure you are well prepared and are using all the study support available to you. This could be via the Library staff and resources that are on offer to all students: see the Library website for more details. The Skills for Learning website has lots of resources too, for example, you can borrow a book on exam technique or have a look at the websites for revision and academic writing tips. The Libraries open 24/7 every day of the year, with silent study areas and many services are also available online via MyBeckett or the Library website mentioned above.  The Library has even created relaxing and motivational Spotify playlists!

Q: What else can I do to make sure I’m prepared for the exams?
A:
Start revision early, so that you can spread it out more, and make sure that you have plenty of time to rest and relax with friends. Make sure you know in advance where and when your exams are and plan your journey/transport and parking (if applicable) in advance. You can find the exam timetable here along with extra information on what to expect. Once you know where your exams are taking place you can use the Metro Journey Planner to help you plan your journey. If you are intending to park at or around Headingley Campus, please be aware that there are parking restrictions in place outside of the campus and parking is very limited. Parking in and around Headingley Carnegie Stadium and Pavilion is also extremely restricted.

Q: I’m feeling very stressed and finding it difficult to concentrate. What can I do?
A:
If you are struggling with exam stress, first and foremost you should talk to someone. Whether it’s family, a friend, a course mate, a trusted tutor or lecturer or your Students’ Union Advisers, talking about it with someone will help you to figure out why you’re feeling stressed, whether it’s workload or if there’s something else you need support with. There are various support services in the University who can help and advise students who are feeling stressed.

Q: Who can I contact in the University if I need some support?
A: If you find yourself feeling overwhelmed and stressed during exams:

  • Check the Student Wellbeing Team's self-help page. There are also a range of self-help guides, available including one on stress, which you can download as a leaflet or an audio file.
  • Your Students' Union Advice team is also on hand to offer independent and confidential advice and representation. Depending on your circumstances we can provide advice on the options available to you such as Extension and Mitigation requests if you don’t feel “fit to sit” your assessments, or answer any queries you may have in relation to concerns about your studies or progress. We can also provide information on hardship funds, or refer to other support services where appropriate. If in doubt about where to seek help, contact us at one of our daily Advice Drop Ins, or by phone or email us.
  • You can also speak to your Academic Adviser (previously know as Personal Tutor) if you have concerns about your studies and you feel that you are not coping. Their contact details can be found in your course handbook:  http://www.leedsbeckett.ac.uk/studenthub/course-handbooks/
  • If you find you need a listening ear outside of Uni opening times you may find it useful to speak to Nightline (20:00 - 08:00) - 0113 3801381 (listening) 0113 3801380 (information)
