Hi, I'm Bilaal. I am a final year student studying Business Management with Marketing and I am a Student Trustee at Leeds Beckett Students' Union.

Being a Student Trustee has been a transformative learning experience. I've gained invaluable insights into corporate governance, understanding how strategic decisions are made and implemented in a multi-million pound organisation. This role has enhanced my understanding of policy development and the importance of aligning strategies with the needs of the student body. I have developed critical skills in leadership, communication and teamwork, working alongside experienced professionals on the Board. The opportunity to contribute to meaningful discussions and influence decisions has not only boosted my confidence but also provided a practical experience which complements my academic studies.

I recently had the opportunity to attend the annual Student Trustee Networking Event at the University of Nottingham which was a fantastic opportunity to connect with other Student Trustees across England and share our experiences. I realised at the event that I was not the only one who was unsure what was going on when initially joining the board!

I was hesitant whether I should take the opportunity to become a Student Trustee at first as I was actively involved with two societies, but I'm glad I took the opportunity. Being part of the Board has made me appreciate the excellent work our Students' Union does behind the scenes to make our student experience better.

I highly recommend applying to become a Student Trustee because not only is it an unparalleled opportunity to gain real world experience in corporate governance whilst studying, but you will also develop crucial skills in leadership, strategic thinking, and communication, all while making a tangible impact on the student community.
