It’s been a busy year for your Student Officers at Leeds Beckett Students’ Union! Whether they’ve been leading Student Assemblies on campus, meeting with other student leaders around the country or representing Beckett students’ voices with university officials, they’ve achieved loads!  

Islam Elserougi, your Undergraduate Officer has had a very busy year advocating for you! Here’s just a few of his highlights: 

• Worked with the team on Shuttle Bus improvements, and we now have a permanent double decker bus!  

• Co-chaired the Community, Belonging and Inclusive Spaces campaign meetings and worked to put us in a strong position to start introducing our asks to the University Estates Team, including drafting a report to present these asks with feedback from a visit our campaign team took to Manchester Metropolitan SU. 

• Worked with the Library Team to explore a new service, Suggest It, where students can now request new technology for Media Loans if they aren’t already available. The Library Team will examine each request to see if they can provide it for students! 

• Successfully campaigned with students for the disaffiliation of Leeds Beckett Students' Union from NUS

Faisal Alsammarraie, your Postgraduate Officer, has also had a very busy year!  

• Worked on the Work & Employment Campaign, focusing on placement transparency, employability, and improving access to opportunities for students. 

• Worked with Careers and senior University staff on improving placement information and accessibility of opportunities through MyHub. 

• Organised MyHub user testing sessions to gather direct student feedback and identify practical improvements. 

• Led work on the Shuttle Bus Campaign, helping secure changes including increased bus capacity, better visibility and signage, integration into the Beckett App, and discussions around additional stop locations. 

• Represented Leeds Beckett students in discussions and voting relating to the National Union of Students referendum and national student representation. 

• Contributed to the Community and Belonging Campaign, including visiting other universities to explore student spaces and ideas that could improve sense of belonging at Leeds Beckett. 

In addition to all these wins, Islam and Faisal worked to ensure that student’s voices were represented in important meetings with officials like at the Board of Governors, LBSU’s Board of Trustees and university directors as well as working to make sure that students were considered in every decision.
