It's Owambe time!

Hear from our Student Community Organiser, Milli, about Nigerian Independence Day!

CommunityNews

Every 1st of October, Nigeria celebrates its Independence Day. It marks the end of colonial rule and the birth of a sovereign nation. 64 years ago, Nigeria gained its independence from British colonial rule. As we reflect on this historical event, it is essential to appreciate the sense of hope it provides for Nigerians all over the world.

Today, Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa with over 250 ethnic groups and numerous languages, a reflection of its diverse ethnic and cultural make up. Nigerian Independence Day is marked by a series of events, including parades and cultural displays by national leaders. It is not only a time for celebration, but also for reflection. It serves as a reminder of the importance of unity in diversity which are themes that are embodied in the national moto 'unity and faith, peace and progress'.

At Leeds Beckett University, this day is of great importance to students, academics and the wider community. It fosters a sense of community for students across the whole university with the Nigerian Society and Nigerian Students' Community creating a space to discuss a range of topics such as cultural differences and a sense of belonging. The Community of 600+ members is inviting all students to celebrate Nigerian Independence Day with them 'Owambe style'. This features traditional dress, music, food and games. It's the perfect way to experience the warmth, culture and joy of Nigerian Independence.

The celebration on October 1st isn't only about looking back at what has been achieved but also envisioning what can be in the future. We're looking forward to celebrating Nigeria's journey of independence and unity together!
