Academic Representation

At Leeds Beckett, over 1,000 student representatives volunteer their time to ensure that you have the very best academic experience while you study. LBSU oversees the academic representation program at Leeds Beckett, working collaboratively with the University and providing ongoing training and support.

Course Reps

Course Representatives are undergraduate (UG) or postgraduate taught (PGT) volunteers who give their time to represent and empower the students on their courses to shape the student experience not only in the current academic year, but evoking change for years to come.

Course Representatives are trained for the role with LBSU and have access to training opportunities over the course of the academic year, including training in Community Organising which forms the basis of our engagement techniques. Course Representatives are also invited to School Assemblies twice per year to meet with the Dean of the School and staff from across the university to discuss students’ needs, and to collaborate on solutions to better the academic experience.

If you would like to become a Course Representative in your area of study, please contact your Course Director to let them know, and they can ensure that you are registered through your Course Administrator.

PGR Representatives

If you are a Postgraduate Research student studying for your PhD or MRes and your main relationship with the university is as a student, then you may have ideas for how the academic experience for you and your peers could be improved.

The role of PGR Representative is a voluntary position where you would be in regular contact with other PGR students in your school to hear their views and collect feedback on their experience. One PGR Rep per school can also attend the School Academic Committee, which takes place approximately 5-6 times per year, to meet with academic staff and discuss the School’s plans for the student experience. Those who attend will be provided a full briefing ahead of meeting to review the papers and topics to be discussed. PGR Reps are supported in their role by Student Community Organisers.

National Union of Students Affiliation

If YES wins Leeds Beckett Students’ Union will remain affiliated with NUS UK and continue to take part in national student representation and campaigning through the organisation. If NO wins Leeds Beckett Students’ Union will leave NUS UK and will no longer be a member of the political and campaigning body. Regardless of the outcome, our affiliation with NUS Charity will remain unchanged. For the result to meet Quorum: a minimum of 4% of LBSU members must cast a vote for the referendum to be valid

Should Leeds Beckett Students’ Union remain affiliated to NUS UK?
