Flourishing Families Leeds was established in 2017 as a charity which serves the Leeds community in the areas of education, literacy, art, food and nutrition, finance and family life. Our goal is to overcome the barriers that hinder people from flourishing and bring about lasting change. Over 520 parents, children and carers have directly benefitted from our work in the last year. https://www.flourishingfamiliesleeds.com/
Story Tellers works in partnership with local primary schools to provide a space for children in Key Stage 1 and their parents to build confidence in their literacy skills. In a friendly and relaxed environment, children and parents take part in different ‘story corners’ in which they share a story through a book, craft, ipad or other activity. By taking part in these story corners at a pace that suits each child and parent, the children are able to practise their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills in a fun and engaging way. This will involve phonics practice in partnership with the schools’ learning, by focusing on or creating different sounds and letters.
Not only do the children benefit, but the parents are able to engage in their child’s learning and literacy skills, making the connection between home and school even stronger. It is also set up in a way in which the parents can build confidence in their own literacy skills.
Literacy mentors need to enjoy working with young children (aged 4-7 years), able to pass an enhanced DBS check and willing to commit to weekly sessions for a period of at least 6 weeks. You must be a native English speaker, or able to speak, read and write English to a high level.
Due to covid-19 we are running fewer groups than usual and volunteer roles are limited. We are very much hoping, however, to have a full programme of projects up and running by the start of next year.
We can confirm that this opportunity has been risk assessed to provide controls for Covid-19 and that our organisation takes full responsibility for the safety of our volunteers.
Minimum commitment level: Once a week
Start Date: 01-10-2020
