Cloth Cat was established in April 1999 as an Industrial & Provident Society for the benefit of the community and registered with the Inland Revenue as an exempt charity. We are a unique and innovative community-led independent organisation that is committed to increasing the quality of life for those people who are most vulnerable and at disadvantage in Leeds by providing a range of services based around music including free courses, support, events and training. We use music as a focus for our activities because it is such an amazing medium to bring people together and break down many of the barriers which are prevalent in society.
We work with a large variety of groups, individuals and organisations including those with mental health problems, disaffected youths on the margins of society, offenders and ex-offenders and the homeless as well as targeting those who are unemployed and in receipt of means tested benefits and we have a long list of local and national partner organisations. We have a has an extensive track record and have developed an excellent reputation in the city for delivering high quality projects and being proactive in making exciting things happen in a practical and friendly way.
Central to the services we offer is our programme of practical music courses in a wide range of subjects which we run in partnership with the Workers Educational Association (WEA) for people aged 19 and above run. Courses take place on an outreach basis at a variety of venues around inner city Leeds, the majority of these target beginners and include music technology, DJing, Song Writing, Music Business, Live Sound Engineering, Sound Recording, Singing, Ukulele, Guitar, Sound Design & Film, and Performance and Stagecraft. They are regularly over-subscribed, and many of our users are referred to us through organisations such as Connexions West Yorkshire, Leeds Mental Health Services, Community Links, Armstrong Learning, Probation Services in Leeds and other agencies within the public and voluntary sectors. We have a highly experienced and motivated team of tutors who have worked within the music industry and have provided inspiration to our users; whilst others have graduated through our work at Cloth Cat to develop their skills to become tutors.
Cloth Cat is a music and education charity supporting people living in disadvantaged areas of Leeds. We improve individuals’ mental health through the power of music.
