Our Divest/Invest campaign calls on the University to contribute through action to the creation of a more just and sustainable world.

These demands can be summed up as:

  • Asking the University to commit permanently to not investing in fossil fuels, arms manufacturers, or the tobacco industry and instead look to invest in renewable and ethical alternatives.
  • To encourage the university to not form any relationships with, or promote any companies that facilitate the fossil fuel, arms or tobacco industries – this includes advertising their graduate schemes and placements.
  • For the University to prioritise giving students guidance on how to choose ethical careers and building links to further enable with opportunities for students to engage in these sectors whilst studying.
  • To encourage the university to take the steps needed to improve their People and Planet league table ranking.

The campaign has also looked at building tangible suggestions on how the University would actually work towards these goals. With NUS we put together the Community Energy Briefing (below), which offers a long-term vision of how Universities could commit to the global fossil free movement by investing in community energy schemes. Not only would such schemes empower the communities around the university, they would also provide you the students with valuable opportunities to engage in the rapidly growing green industry.

Currently we’re looking for students to get involved in this campaign, to bring your ideas to the table and help make Leeds Beckett the vibrant hub for environmental activists and justice that it should be.

How can I get involved in environmental activism?

  • If you’ve got an idea for an environmental campaign you’d like to run at the university drop us a line! It can be as little as disposable cups or as big as divestment.  Just fill out the get involved form and we’ll be in touch.
  • You can check and see if we have any Environmental volunteering opportunities available.
  • Leeds for Change can show you all the different Ecological Justice and Land, Food & Agriculture organisations and groups that exist in Leeds.

Already a budding environmentalist and working on something? Let us know! We’d love to work with you and support you. Just drop us an email.
