So you're thinking of setting up a new society?

That's great to hear! We are always keen to support students to start new societies, but remember to check your society doesn't already exist by looking at our active societies here.

A society can be set up around almost anything, like a hobby, course or faith. We often find there are lots of other people wanting to come together to share their interests, it just takes a few individuals to bring it all together. We’re here to help you every step of the way!

You can also adopt a society that existed in the past, but currently has no leaders. Be sure to check out our Adopt a Society page to see which societies are available for adoption.

Below, we’ve gathered some more information to help you understand the process and benefits of starting a society, as well as what is expected from you.

Why start a Society?

Here are just a few of the benefits of starting a new society:

  • All new societies will receive a £50 start-up grant which we encourage you to use to run your first event or buy society equipment
  • As a society, you will have access to the Student Union Activities Funding. This is grant funding provided by the SU to help towards the costs of events, fees, or equipment
  • Dedicated and free website space to promote your society
  • Free advertising space for society events on the SU website
  • Commission-free ticket sales for your events
  • Commission-free membership sales
  • Practical support with society events for example; risk assessment and room bookings

Suggested leadership roles

President

The President of a society is the leader, who oversees all its activity and direction. Throughout the academic year this person will need to provide support, guidance, and direction to the other committee members and the wider membership of the society. You will also be the main person of contact for the members as well as the Students' Union.

For more information on the role, we recommend reading the Committee Roles Handbook.

Secretary

The Secretary’s primary function is to ensure the smooth running of the society. Rooms need booking, emails need writing, accurate records need keeping, and above all else you need to communicate appropriately both to the committee and the entire society membership.

For more information on the role, we recommend reading the Committee Roles Handbook.

Treasurer

The Treasurer oversees and monitors the financial affairs of the society. However, it is more than just handling money. It is about understanding your society's finances and planning and budgetting accordingly to ensure the successful running of the society.

For more information on the role, we recommend reading the Committee Roles Handbook.
