This Black History Month, join us in celebrating this year’s powerful theme: ‘Standing Firm in Power and Pride’. It’s a time to recognise the strength, resilience and spirit of the Black community. We’ve highlighted a range of events happening across Leeds that honour Black history, culture and progress, so come along and get involved!

Black Women’s Collective Sip and Paint

Time and Judgement: A Diary of a 400 Year Exile

Head down to Hyde Park Picture House for a screening of this radical documentary, initially commission for Channel 4 in its early broadcasting days. Enjoy theatrical performance, verse, music and visual art, to narrate the struggles and triumphs of African diaspora communities globally. After the screening, stay for a talk with filmmaker and writer Imruh Bakari, to discuss workshop collectives that inspired him to create Time and Judgement film.

50 Years On: Caribbean women and the Chapeltown Bonfire Night incident of 1975

Join Dr Olivia Wyatt to celebrate the culture, history and achievements of black communities and explore the often forgotten role of women on the Bonfire Night incident and its aftermath. Discover the events of Bonfire Night 1975 and the struggle and racism that black communities in Leeds faced, and understand why and how young Black women assisted the boys on trial.

Black Repetitions: A Lecture Performance

Join Ahamefule J. Oluo in this lecture-performance and immerse yourself in Black music and its political, social and cultural reverberations. Weave personal and familial narratives of race and music with live demonstrations of the constructions and technologies of sound and instrumentations.

Beyond the Monolith: Black histories, Diverse narratives

Community wellbeing hub, Reginald Terrace, Leeds, LS7 3EZ, 22nd October 5:30pm-7:30pm

Celebrate Black History Month this year through the richness of the Black diaspora and challenging the notion that Black identities are identified by pain, struggle and trauma. Through storytelling, performance, art, panels and workshops challenge stereotypes and witness the full spectrum of Black identities.

The Story of Lovers Rock

Shabazz’s debut documentary comes to Hyde Park Picture House this Black History Month to tell the story of a genre of British reggae that still thrives today. Uncover an often forgotten period in British music that developed in the late 70s and 80s, against the backdrop of racial tensions and riots.
