We are pleased to welcome Dr Carl Austin-Behan to Leeds Beckett to mark LGBT+ History Month.
Dr Carl Austin-Behan OBE DL is a community activist who currently serves as LGBTQ+ adviser to the Mayor of Greater Manchester.
He served as Lord Mayor of Manchester from May 2016 to May 2017, being its first openly gay Lord Mayor. Carl served in the Royal Air Force from April 1991 until October 1997 when he was discharged from the Royal Air Force for being gay at a time when it was illegal to be openly gay in the RAF. He is now a trustee of Fighting with Pride, a charity who aims to improve the lives of LGBT+ veterans and their families. He was also awarded an OBE in the 2020 Queen’s New Year’s Honours List for services to Charity, LGBTQ+ Equality and to the Community across Greater Manchester.
Harsh Bhatia will host this event comprising of a talk from Carl about his remarkable career and life experiences, then facilitate a Q&A session with questions from students and staff.
