Blue Christmas Service

Monday 24 November 2025

1pm - 11:59pm

Acre room, James Graham Building, Headingley Campus

A Blue Christmas service is a special service designed to offer comfort to those struggling during the holiday season. Recognizing that Christmas can be a time of sorrow for individuals dealing with grief, loss, or emotional pain, the service provides a space for reflection and healing.

Typically held in a quiet, subdued atmosphere, the service includes prayers, scripture readings, poetry, and music that reflects a more sombre tone. A key element is the candle-lighting ceremony, where attendees may light candles to remember loved ones or express grief. The service acknowledges pain but also affirms the hope  in difficult times.

Blue Christmas services offer a supportive environment for those who may feel isolated or overwhelmed by the "merry" expectations of the season, allowing them to find peace and community during a challenging time of year.

The service is Christian. However, people of all faiths and none are very welcome to attend and be as involved as they are comfortable.
