Lack of attendance and engagement can lead to lower grades, module failure or even being withdrawn from your course. If you've struggled to engage with your course and have been withdrawn, our Advice Service is here to support you! Keep reading for all the details on what to expect throughout the process and how we can help you appeal.

What do I do if my engagement and attendance is affected?

In the University's Engagement Policy it states:

"The University understands that occasionally there will be good reason why you cannot attend a class or engage in your studies for a short time. You must contact your course team to let them know if you are unable to attend a class or engage in your studies for any reason. This may then be recorded as an ‘authorised absence’. Depending on the length and nature of absence, they will be able to signpost relevant support and procedures to help you keep on track."

It is important that you maintain contact with the University so that they understand what may be impacting your engagement and offer support if you need it. Please contact your Academic Adviser or your Course Administrator directly to provide an update if your attendance is affected:

Other Support available

Students can contact their Academic Adviser, University Wellbeing, Disability Advice or Student Services Student Advice.

You can also seek advice from the Students Union Advice Service; we are independent from the University and you can discuss any concerns you are having in a confidential manner.

What happens if I keep failing to attend or engage in my studies?

Your engagement and attendance are monitored by the University.

Lack of attendance and engagement can lead to lower grades, module failure or even being withdrawn from your course of study so it is important that you communicate with your course staff and seek support at the earliest opportunity if you are struggling to engage.

What can I do if I have been withdrawn by an Attendance and Engagement Panel?

Every student will have the right to appeal a decision to withdraw you from your course.

How long do I have to appeal?

10 working days from the date of the decision letter. In exceptional circumstance the university might accept an appeal later than this.

Who can help with appealing the decision?

If you are withdrawn by an Engagement and Attendance Panel, you can contact the Students' Union Advice Service for advice and support in appealing the decision.

We can advise on the appeal grounds and provide feedback on your draft appeal form and supporting evidence. We can also answer any questions you may have about the procedure.

It is important that you send us the documentation relating to the Engagement and Attendance Panel’s decision as soon as possible. You can do this by attaching a copy of all the emails you have received in relation to the matter to our contact form available here: The Advice Service
