Gigi for Welfare Officer 2023!!

I’m Gigi, and I’m a Music Industries Management student based in the Leeds School of Arts- I also happen to be the current SARA (Student Academic Representative Assistant) for the LSA, along with additionally serving the student community directly as LBSU’s Trans Student Community Leader.

During my three years at Leeds Beckett, I’ve always been involved in engagement with the vastly diverse student community- through my work these past few years, I’ve pushed for accessibility, awareness and acceptance for marginalised communities, and improving the overall wellbeing of students across the School of Arts and the LBSU; examples of this include representing students in talks with university officials to gain more assistance for struggling students following COVID-19 and the cost of living crisis, representing the LBSU at LGBTQ+ events, and working towards making preferred names and pronouns easier to implement and enforce.

I’ve given my all to the welfare of students within my community- I intend to extend this dedication and action to the entire University in my potential final year with the LBSU and extended Leeds Beckett student community.

Should I be elected, I can assure the following changes and arrangements will be implemented by myself upon a successful campaign for the Welfare Officer position:

  • Re-instituting and remodelling the Digital Access Fund, allowing students to access personal high-end technology to own, supplied by communal trade-in of preowned products (MacBooks, IPads and specialist equipment required for courses)- this is already due to be implemented for the School of Arts in the following months by myself and the team, but will be extended to the entire University should I be elected

  • Active action to protect students against and negate financial difficulties caused by the cost of living crisis, including Hive vouchers to ensure hot meals for all students involved with aiding the student community during these trying times-  this is already due to be implemented for the School of Arts in the following months by myself and the team, but will be extended to the entire University should I be elected

  • Personal Welfare 1-1 Drop-In Sessions- these will be an addition to all other drop-in and 1-1 sessions available throughout the University and LBSU, and be dedicated to addressing individual issues that students are having, whether it be course-related concerns, housing, employment or financial woes, or just a confidential coffee and venting session

I truely look forward to the opportunity to make the big changes I’ve been working on these past few years across the entire university and student community at large, should I be elected as your Welfare Officer- should you have any questions or would like to know more about my work and policies, I’d be more than happy to have a conversation on campus should you see me around, or you can drop me an email: d.meyer@leedsbeckett.ac.uk
