This community organises on behalf of students at Leeds Beckett who are parents or have caring responsibilities and provide a space for us to network, and provide support and feedback.

To join this community you must first self-identify as a parent or carer.

Welcome to our community group designed specifically for Leeds Beckett students who are also parents or carers. We understand that unique challenges arise when juggling the responsibilities of education and parenthood or other caring responsibilities, and our mission is to create a supportive space to organise on issues that affect you.

Joining our community group offers you the opportunity to connect with fellow students who understand the joys and challenges of being both parents or carers and learners. Our community fosters an inclusive environment where you can engage in open discussions, exchange valuable insights, and collaborate on initiatives aimed at making student life better for all parents and carers at university.

Collaboration is key to our community. We stand in solidarity with other marginalised groups, recognising the importance of intersectionality. We promote inclusivity and diversity, championing the rights and voices of students of all backgrounds, including but not limited to faith, disability, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, and race.

We prioritise the safety and well-being of our members, fostering an environment that is free from threat and intimidation. As such, we do not tolerate racist, anti-Semitic, islamophobic, fascist, sexist, xenophobic, ableist, LGBT-phobic or ageist views expressed within any of our spaces.

Why should I join?

We're delighted to offer you free membership to any student community you identify with, giving you access to exciting opportunities to get involved in change-making activity as well as providing you with valuable information and resources to support your journey at Leeds Beckett.

By joining, you'll also gain entry to a private online community forum where you can connect with fellow students in your community to discuss shared experiences and agree on priority campaigns.

Throughout the year, there will be numerous opportunities for you to participate in both online and on-campus activities. We encourage you to have your voice heard and get involved. If you have any ideas for activities you'd like to see or specific feedback regarding your experience as a student parent and/or student carer, don't hesitate to get in touch with our Student Community Organisers by emailing lbsu-community-organisers@leedsbeckett.ac.uk.

The following priorities outline our guiding vision for making student parents and carers’ lives better.

We recognise that priorities evolve with time and new ideas emerge. We embrace this dynamic nature and encourage active participation, welcoming fresh perspectives, new priorities, and celebrating achievements as they happen.

Support
  • We will provide information about the Community and relevant support services to all students at the University, and encourage participation in our activities.
  • We will lobby the University to provide clear and accessible information about the kind of support available to student parents and carers, including information on finances, health, wellbeing and on-campus facilities.
  • We will lobby the University for greater support with childcare, including linking to childcare services in Leeds to support students to access these.
  • We will lobby the government to provide greater financial assistance to support student parents and carers succeed in education.
Accessibility & Inclusivity
  • We will lobby the University to provide services to support student parents while on-campus, including providing greater facilities such as fridges to store milk and rooms for students to express milk in comfort and privacy
