We link with over 200 local charities to offer you a wide range of opportunities that fit around you and your commitments. If you can volunteer on a long term basis or just have a few spare minutes, anyone can take part.

  • Postgraduate Research Students' Representative

    PGR Reps are volunteers who represent the views of postgraduate research students within their School. They liaise with academic and...

    PLEASE NOTE:

    • To apply for this position, you must be a Leeds Beckett postgraduate research student between September 2023 and July 2024.
    • Individuals whose primary relationship with the University is as a student, a student with teaching privileges or a student undertaking a student staff role with the University are eligible to apply for this role.
    • Individuals whose primary relationship with the University is as a staff member, who happens to be studying, are not eligible to apply for this role.

    Student representatives spend an average of 1-2 hours per week in their role during term-time. Outlined below are the reasonable expectations of what PGR Reps will undertake by volunteering for the role. 

    Preparing yourself for the role 

    • Attending your initial induction training session; 

    • Considering the additional training and ongoing development opportunities available;

    • Participating in appropriate events such as postgraduate research open days and induction.

    Gathering and understanding student opinions 

    • Regularly communicating with your peers / community to hear their views and collect their feedback; 

    • Listening to students and signposting available support across the University; 

    • Ensuring that you are truly representative by considering students’ varied experiences and backgrounds. 

    Liaising with both staff and students to find solutions 

    • Articulating student feedback to the most appropriate academic and/or professional services staff, in good time; 

    • Attending meetings with the University and Students' Union to discuss and identify ways to address student feedback; 

    • Communicating with the PGR Representation Assistant on issues that extend beyond just your School; 

    • Attending the Have Your Say forum to feed students’ views into student policy and campaign discussions and decisions. 

    Communicating outcomes and updates 

    • Reporting results, explanations and changes back to the students in your School after meetings with university staff; 

    • Submitting a pro-forma report at the end of each semester to report key successes and progress.

    PLEASE NOTE: This role is available to Leeds Beckett students who identify within the Global Majority Community, which represents students of African, Asian, Arabic, Chinese and Caribbean descent.

    Student representatives spend an average of 1-2 hours per week in their role during term-time. Outlined below are the reasonable expectations of what Global Majority Students' Representatives will undertake by volunteering for the role. 

    Preparing yourself for the role 

    • Attending your initial induction training session; 

    • Considering the additional training and ongoing development opportunities available.

    • To apply for this position, you must be a Leeds Beckett Undergraduate or Masters student between September 2023 and July 2024.
    • Expressions of interest should be made directly to Course Directors

    Student representatives spend an average of 1-2 hours per week in their role during term-time. Outlined below are the reasonable expectations of what Course Reps will undertake by volunteering for the role. 

    Preparing yourself for the role 

    • Attending your initial induction training session; 

    • Considering the additional training and ongoing development opportunities available;

    • Participating in appropriate events relevant to your course or position with the Students' Union such as School Forums, Have Your Say and the Course Rep Conference.

    Gathering and understanding student opinions 

    • Regularly communicating with your peers / community to hear their views and collect their feedback; 

    • Listening to students and signposting available support across the University; 

    • Ensuring that you are truly representative by considering students’ varied experiences and backgrounds.

    Are you looking to make a real difference to the lives of students across Leeds while also gaining valuable skills and experience during the process?

    Are you tired of unreliable and expensive busses in Leeds? If you are one of the many students whose education and life in Leeds has been affected by poor transport options, we need you to join us!

    At LBSU, our team of Officers and Student Community Organisers need you to help support our campaign to improve the cost and reliability of bus transport in Leeds to make them work for students! The more students that get involved to support this activity the greater power we will have to create the change you wish to see.

    We are looking for students to volunteer as part of a team to drive forward this change. You are invited to join a campaign action team, which will be supported by staff from the SU and Leeds Citizens, who can provide guidance and expertise help engage you with our campaign cycle.

    As a member of a campaign action team, you can expect to work with other students to build momentum for the campaign, work to define clear objectives for creating change, and take part in building collective power to negotiate with stakeholders to win the change students want to see.

    The Busses Action Group will work towards:

    • Firstly, expanding the £1.40 student fares to all areas in Leeds to account for the diversity of places that our students live in.
    • Secondly, the ambition to reduce all bus fares for all Leeds students in all areas of Leeds to £1.
    • Once we have achieved this for Leeds, roll this out across west Yorkshire.
    • Additionally, improve the reliability of live bus tracking information (including the app and at bus stops) across the whole City.

    No experience is necessary to join the action group, we only ask that you are a student at Leeds Beckett whose life would be improved by a more reliable and equitable bus service in Leeds and are willing to join us to help lead on this work.

    Do you wish your university timetable was more flexible and allowed time for you to engage with other priorities such as part time work, care-giving, and extra-curricular activities alongside your studies?

    At LBSU, our team of Officers and Student Community Organisers need you to help support our campaign to change timetables at LBU to make them work for students! The more students that get involved to support this activity the greater power we will have to create the change you wish to see.

    We are looking for students to volunteer as part of a team to drive forward this change. You are invited to join a campaign action team, which will be supported by staff from the SU and Leeds Citizens, who can provide guidance and expertise help engage you with our campaign cycle.

    As a member of a campaign action team, you can expect to work with other students to build momentum for the campaign, work to define clear objectives for creating change, and take part in building collective power to negotiate with stakeholders to win the change students want to see.

    The Timetabling Action Group will initially work towards:

    • Reducing the number of days in a week that students are required to be on campus for teaching.
    • Allowing students with caring responsibilities to have a choice of their class times to fit around their care responsibilities.
    • Enabling greater use of a hybrid delivery of teaching and learning.

    No experience is necessary to join the action group, we only ask that you are a student at Leeds Beckett whose life would be improved by a more flexible, condensed study timetable and are willing to join us to help lead on this work.

    At LBSU, our team of Officers and Student Community Organisers need you to help support our campaign to bring part-time jobs to Leeds Beckett students! The more students that get involved to support this activity the greater power we will have to create the change you wish to see.

    We are looking for students to volunteer as part of a team to drive forward this change. You are invited to join a campaign action team, which will be supported by staff from the SU and Leeds Citizens, who can provide guidance and expertise help engage you with our campaign cycle.

    As a member of a campaign action team, you can expect to work with other students to build momentum for the campaign, work to define clear objectives for creating change, and take part in building collective power to negotiate with stakeholders to win the change students want to see.

    The Part-time Work Action Group will be exploring:

    • Building support sessions with the careers team to help students with job applications.
    • Better promotion of support available to students to help them work on their CVs and on
      specialist subjects.
    • Campaigning for the creation of a Job Shop available for part-time students.
    • Working with employers to give more part time jobs to students and support them to work around their reduced flexibility.

    No experience is necessary, we only ask that you are a student at Leeds Beckett whose life would be improved by greater job-seeking support and more opportunities for paid work and are willing to join us to help lead on this work.
