Volunteering with Home-Start in Leeds

Home-Start Leeds offers a ‘volunteer home visiting family support’ service for families that have at least one child under 7 years old or are expecting a baby.

Our volunteers visit families at home, usually weekly, and offer parents support and friendship during a time in which the family are struggling with a range of difficulties that often leave parents feeling overwhelmed and stressed.

There are a variety of issues the families may be facing from learning to be a new parent, dealing with the day to day pressures of bringing up young children, debt, housing issues, poor mental health, and relationship difficulties to being an asylum seeker and new to Leeds.

We offer our volunteers:

  • Excellent induction/preparation and continued learning and development opportunities, including some accredited courses.
  • Our excellent preparation course which lasts approx. 45 hours, delivered usually over 15 weeks once a week for 3 hours.  Courses take place in the daytime or evening.
  • Regular high quality support and supervision provided by one of our highly trained co-ordinators.

We expect volunteers to:

  • Be parents or have ‘parenting experience’ gained from a range of life experiences.
  • Visit a family regularly at home, usually once a week for 2-4 hours.  The average period of support for families is currently 18 months.
  • Be able to commit to 100% attendance at the preparation course. The course is FREE.
  • Complete an enhanced DBS check through Home-Start and provide two relevant references.

With Covid-19 and current government guidelines ongoing we have adapted our service to be able to provide training to our volunteers through a mixture of both face to face sessions and zoom. We have also been able to adapt our service to offer support to the families via various IT platforms as well as over the telephone in order to still provide support throughout the pandemic and to comply with local restrictions.
