Flourishing Families Leeds was established in 2017 as a charity which serves the Leeds community in the areas of education, literacy, art, food and nutrition, finance and family life. Our goal is to overcome the barriers that hinder people from flourishing and bring about lasting change. Over 520 parents, children and carers have directly benefitted from our work in the last year. https://www.flourishingfamiliesleeds.com/
Flourishing Families are looking for students to join our team of volunteer mentors to help lead activities in our lunchtime and after school groups in primary schools in Bramley, West Leeds. The sessions last between 40 mins to 1 hour and the groups consist of around 8 pupils. Activities are mostly arts and crafts based - we make junk model robots, grass head men, pompoms, masks, dream catchers and much more.
The aim of the sessions is to grow the childrens’ creative and social confidence through learning new skills and spending time with the mentors. We provide a safe space for them to share issues relating to personal identity, memories, emotions and other topics. The groups are a huge amount of fun to work, and we are really pleased to be able to support the children and track their progress as they grow and develop.
Volunteers need to be enthusiastic about working in schools and confident in talking to chidlren and engaging with their creative projects. Volunteers also need to be punctual, organised, and willing to lend a hand with setting up a classroom and unpacking art and craft materials.
Due to Covid-19, we are running fewer groups than usual this term and the number of volunteer roles is limited. We very much hope that we will have a full programme of projects up and running by the start of next year.
We can confirm that this opportunity has been risk assessed to provide controls for Covid-19 and that our organisation takes full responsibility for the safety of our volunteers.
Minimum commitment level: Once a week
