Students at Leeds Beckett University are challenging themselves to a night of sleeping rough to raise money and awareness for St George's Crypt.
Participants will give up a night of comfort in exchange for sleeping outside in conditions similar to those experienced by the homeless. Volunteers hope to top last year's total of £1800 which was raised on behalf of St George's Crypt, a homeless charity in Leeds.
The university works closely with St George's Crypt, whose aim is to provide shelter, food and support for the homeless in the city. Sophie Moody, Community Engagement Coordinator at Leeds Beckett University Students' Union, said: "We have... quite a lot of volunteering opportunities with St George’s Crypt... These are usually events such as bag packs and local fundraising opportunities but we have also done staff volunteering days down at St George’s Crypt where Students’ Union staff have gone and given a day to the charity."
The Students’ Union has also run various other student led projects including a recent collection of sanitary products for homeless people by students and staff across both campuses.
The sleep out is scheduled to take place from 19:00 on the 23 February and will last for 12 hours. Volunteers will sleep outside the James Graham Building on The Acre, where refreshments will be provided and security will be on site. Each volunteer should raise at least £20 to donate and students are being urged to sign up via the Students' Union volunteer team if they would like to participate.
A Huge thank you for Jess Hodgson who is a Level 4 Public Relations with Journalism student here at Leeds Beckett University for volunteering to write this piece on ‘A Night on the Acre’.
