Luka Watts

Hi!

My name is Luka Watts and I’m running for the role of Academic Experience officer. I am studying English with creative writing, and am on the Autism Spectrum, which has led to me experiencing university in a different way to some.

This role is important to me because I believe every student in Beckett is owed an enriching and fulfilling University experience, no matter their circumstances or background.

If I were to be elected, I would:

-Pursue improvements in remote learning for those that are unable to make it into class reliably due to things like poor public transport or health reasons.

There’ve been many times where I have had to rely on buses during my degree and they have simply not shown up, causing me a great deal of stress. As someone who began my university experience during Covid – and as someone who doesn’t drive – it is particularly important to me that students have options when it comes to remote learning if they should require it.

-Increase the frequency of shuttlebuses between campuses for students living outside of accommodation. This also improve cross-promotion of events taking place on each campus and allow students from different schools more opportunities to interact.

This is especially important for students like me who live closer to the campus that isn’t their main place of study.

-Try to introduce more social opportunities for students within their respective schools to try and help foster friendships and connections between students who struggle to fully integrate into university life.

I promise to work alongside the student’s union and the societies within in it to improve the academic experience for students as best I can. As a former society leader myself, I understand the importance of topics such as accessibility, and have learnt lots about making accommodations for students of all backgrounds.

Thank you for your time, happy voting!
