Qasim Aftab

Students of Leeds Beckett University,

I, Qasim Aftab, through the position of Academic Experience Officer, promise to bring change that suits all!

With a deep commitment to enhancing the academic journey of every student, I offer a vision focused on inclusivity, engagement, and continuous improvement.

Why Me?

With three years of dedicated study in Biomedical Science, I have immersed myself in the academic environment, understanding the challenges and opportunities students face.

Serving as the Student Academic Representation Assistant (SARA) for the School of Health for two out of those three years, I have actively advocated for student needs, represented your voices in various forums, and collaborated with stakeholders to drive positive change.

My experience has equipped me with the ability to listen to your concerns directly, work collaboratively in teams, and implement meaningful initiatives to make changes that reflect the collective voice of the Leeds Beckett University (LBU) student body.

What Changes Will I Make?

  1. Revamping the academic advisor system: I will prioritise increasing one-on-one time and establishing a robust student mentoring system to provide personalized support and guidance.
  2. Developing student voice and course identity: Through access to creative opportunities such as social media, blog posts, podcasts, and events, I will empower you to express yourselves and foster a strong sense of identity within your academic journey, representing yourselves, your courses and the wider university through your respective platforms.
  3. Focus on course accreditation/reaccreditation: By enhancing teaching, learning, and graduate outcomes through rigorous accreditation processes, we will ensure the highest quality education for all students across the university.
  4. Improving advice and opportunities for non-traditional career paths: I will work to expand resources and support for students exploring unconventional career paths or further education, ensuring they have the guidance and opportunities they need to succeed.
  5. Continuing development of course-based societies: Through promotion, recruitment, events, and increased academic integration, I will nurture vibrant communities within each course, enriching your academic experience and fostering a sense of belonging.

Who Will This Change Impact?

This manifesto is for every student within the wider LBU community, across all nine schools. Whether you are a traditional or international undergraduate, postgraduate, distance learner or apprentice, my initiatives are designed to enhance your academic journey.

Academic staff and decision-makers will also feel the positive impact of these changes, as we work collaboratively to create an environment conducive to academic excellence and student success.

In conclusion, I pledge to serve as an advocate for your academic experience, striving to make improvements that are driven by you, reflective of you, and ultimately, for you. Together, let us embark on a journey of positive transformation and empowerment within Leeds Beckett University.
