Supporting Statement for the Position of Academic Experience Officer

Hello everyone, my name is Chinwoke Ejionueme-Ifepe (she/her), and I am running for the position of Academic Experience Officer because I am committed to bringing about positive change within Leeds Beckett University that would benefit students irrespective of their abilities, gender, ethnicity, and sexual orientation. Leeds Beckett University is made up of diverse set of students and so inclusivity, equity, and equality must be upheld in all areas.

My work as a student organiser not only improved my listening, communication, interpersonal and empathetic skills, which are very relevant to this role, but also allowed me to identify both the common issues faced by students and the likely root causes of these issues.

When elected as your Academic Experience officer, I will champion positive change campaigns, with your support, to achieve the desired results, thus building upon the work I have already undertaken and continuing in this regard, to set the ball rolling as soon as possible.

If elected,

  • I will be instrumental in bridging the gap between the opportunities available to students and the barriers preventing them from accessing or engaging with same through favourable timetable schedules for ALL students. That way, students have time to balance their personal, academic, and work lives.

  • I will promote a greater sense of community and belonging among students by fostering diversity and inclusivity, bringing visibility for the Student Union and the services offered, helping students understand what constitutes academic malpractice, accessibility of the Leeds Beckett University hardship funds to help mitigate financial burdens students encounter.

  • I will collaborate with the disability office to identify and implement practical accessibility goals to ensure that students are supported throughout their studies, regardless of abilities.
