BLACK WOMAN REPRESENTATIVE

Introduction: I am ADEBOLA MERCY, from Nigeria, and I am excited to run for the position of NUS Liberation Conference Rep (black woman representative) to represent the diverse voices of Leeds Beckett students at the national level. Our university community is rich with unique perspectives, and I am committed to advocating for inclusivity, equality, and social justice.

1. Amplifying Marginalized Voices: I will actively work to amplify the voices of the Black student communities within our student body. Through open forums, surveys, anonymous suggestion boxes and collaboration with student groups and societies, I will ensure that the concerns and experiences of all students are brought to the forefront.

2. Advocacy for Inclusive Policies: I will advocate for the development and implementation of inclusive policies at both the national and local levels. This includes policies that address issues such as gender equality and racial justice.

3. Collaboration with Liberation Groups: I will foster strong partnerships with various liberation groups within Leeds Beckett Students’ Union. By actively engaging with these groups, I aim to create an inclusive and united front that stands against discrimination and promotes a campus culture of acceptance.

4. Mental Health and Well-being: I am committed to addressing the mental health challenges faced by students, especially those within black communities. I will collaborate with mental health services to ensure that they are sensitive to the unique needs of different student groups.

5. Intersectionality in Representation: I will advocate for policies that acknowledge and address the interconnected nature of discrimination. This includes considering how various forms of oppression impact individuals differently.

6. Educational Outreach: I will initiate educational campaigns and workshops to promote understanding and awareness of issues related to liberation and social justice. This will contribute to creating a more informed and empathetic student body.

7. Sustainability and Environmental Justice: I will work towards integrating sustainability and environmental justice into the liberation discourse. This includes advocating for sustainable practices on campus and raising awareness about the disproportionate impact of environmental issues on black communities.

8. Transparent Communication: I am committed to maintaining transparent communication channels. Regular updates, newsletters, and town hall meetings will ensure that all students are informed about ongoing initiatives, policy changes, and opportunities for involvement.

I am dedicated to making Leeds Beckett Students’ Union a place where every student feels heard, valued, and supported. Through collaboration, advocacy, and a commitment to inclusivity, I aim to represent our university community effectively at the NUS Liberation Conference.
