I'm Amara Aksar, a Visually Impaired counselling and mental health student standing for disabled students, people of colour and women, at the NUS liberation conference. Growing up with a disability comes with a lot of challenges, from facing discriminatory attitudes to basic access needs being overlooked.

Resultantly, I was required to advocate for myself, thus I am passionate about speaking up for minority voices in my communities. For example, I worked with SU staff and student leaders to propose a policy to NUS regarding the need for monitoring and training around the compliance of Reasonable Adjustment Plans, as well as holding lecturers accountable for failing to follow the RAP. Therefore, listening to student experience is of the utmost importance to me, hence I work with the LBSU as a Student Community Organiser to campaign for improved student life. This opportunity will allow me to amplify those student voices.

From discussions, I am aware that the cost-of-living crisis especially affects international and disabled students. Failure to comply with disabled students reasonable adjustments is another prominent issue, as well as the need to have access to more menstrual products in toilets. These are key issues that I am keen to address at the liberation conference. Also, I am open to hear your student voice relating things you would like me to take forward to NUS to make change. Please contact me on my email below with any issues you would like me to address or if you would like to have a 1-to-1 chat:
