Dear Students of Leeds Beckett University,

As we stand on the precipice of change, I am reaching out to share my vision and to ask for your support as I run for the position of Welfare Officer. My journey as an advocate for student welfare began as a course representative, where I championed the rights and needs of students. This role opened my eyes to the broader spectrum of challenges faced by our entire student body, inspiring me to expand my advocacy to include every student at Leeds Beckett University. This passion led me to take a role with Student Union as Student Academic Representative Assistant.

This role has led me to expand my ability to help students even more. While on this role, I fought for international students who, due to no fault of their own, arrived late and faced the possibility of being sent back to Nigeria. Through persistent efforts, I ensured that eight of our peers from Nigeria were allowed to stay, safeguarding their right to education.

I have also worked with the sense of belonging team to help foster stronger and inclusive community among all students.

I worked to support students in advocating for specialized training to bridge the knowledge gap. This initiative, aimed at reducing the failure rate, highlights a universal need: tailored academic support for all students, recognizing the diverse backgrounds we come from.

In a recent push for equity, I proposed a policy to reduce the International Health Surcharge (IHS) fee for international students, a move that is currently under governmental review. This action speaks to a broader commitment to make education in the UK more accessible and affordable for all, an ethos I plan to extend across various aspects of student welfare.

If elected, I envision a welfare strategy that encompasses the needs of every student at Leeds Beckett University. My manifesto includes:

•         Inclusive Support Systems: I intend to work with counsellors in the University to develop a more improved counselling services that covers all aspects of student’s well-being including academic, mental, and emotional well-being of all students, recognizing the unique challenges faced by diverse students, mature students, those with disabilities, and every member of our diverse community.

•         Enhanced Academic Assistance: Expanding tailored academic support to include mentorship programs, study groups, and workshops that cater to the varied learning styles and backgrounds of our student body

•         A Voice for All: Representing the entire student body at the upcoming NUS conference policy change meeting in April to advocate for policies that benefit us all, including the crucial amendment of the IHS fee policy.

Your Vote, Our Future

To make this vision a reality, I humbly ask for your vote for me as your next Welfare Officer and for my attendance at the NUS conference. Together, we can build a more inclusive, supportive, and vibrant community at Leeds Beckett University. Your vote is not just for me but for a future where every student's welfare is a priority.
